Thank You for participating in our Becoming Anti-Racist Discussion

Thank you so much for joining us at our virtual session, Becoming Anti-Racist, on Thursday July 9th!
Thank you for your sharing and your transparency during the conversation.

We wanted to provide you with some of the material we discussed both in terms of what we had prepared and also what came up in the discussion.  We are also sharing some additional resources to help us all create a level of awareness and understanding along the journey to becoming anti-racist.

These lists are not exhaustive by any means and please note that we have compiled these lists based on our own research and are still reading and viewing the  material.  There are many more books, films and articles out there for you to explore.

Becoming Anti-Racist:

Self-Reflection Diversity Questions:

  • When was the last time you had to think about your ethnicity, race, gender identity, ability level, religion, and/or sexual orientation? In addition to that, what provoked you to think about or acknowledge it?

  • When watching TV, how likely are you to watch a show with characters that represent you (based on the characteristics mentioned above)?

  • How diverse are your social media feeds? Is there diversity amongst your friends and followers?

  • How often do you attend a social gathering with people different to yourself (i.e. people of a different race, gender, religion, etc.)?

  • How do you respond when people around you make negative comments about individuals of other races, genders, religions, etc. than you?

  • How diverse is the community/neighborhood in which you live?

  • How do you feel when you are in a community different to yours?

  • How would you make your community/neighborhood more inclusive and sensitive?

  • If you have ever reflected and found that you benefit from privilege, what did you do with that realization?

Tips To Become An Anti-Racist (Ibram X. Kendi)

  1. Understand the definition of racist

    • Conversations about racism often suffer when participants can't define the meaning of the word

  2. Stop saying "I'm not racist.“

    • By saying you are not something that can be viewed as a self-serving sentiment and not allow you to recognize an opportunity that lies within

  3. Identify racial inequities and disparities

    • Racism yields racial inequities and disparities in every sector of private and public life

  4. Confront the racist ideas you've held or continue to hold

    • Once you've begun identifying racial disparities, examine whether your own views or beliefs have justified racial inequality

  5. Understand how your antiracism needs to be intersectional

    • racist ideas and policies target many different people within racial groups

  6. Champion antiracist ideas and policies

    • You cannot strive to be antiracist without action
