In Honor of Black History Month: A Seat At The Table

This project highlights the duality of comfort and disruption thru the medium of hair. Seat at the table is meant to force viewers to confront this topic while simultaneously looking at an everyday object.

The frame of the chair is sleek and minimalistic with long strands of box braids draped as a hammock. The artist choose this approach to allow the braids to be the focal point of the piece. For many black women hair is woven into their experience and seems to have as much of a seat at the table as any skill, higher education or other qualifications that makes a black woman the right candidate. This bias becomes something you can’t ignore and becomes apart of a black woman’s daily consciousness.

Through this chair, the artist wanted to share that experience with viewers and incite a line of questioning around hair and how it may effect daily lives.
