Keeping Up With The Pace

Shades Readers, this month, we are focusing on navigating through some of the challenges of today’s work environment so that you can be the best version of yourselves as you build and sustain your career.  We are excited to open up the dialogue and to help in any way!

This week, we are focusing on keeping up with the pace of change in the workplace.  We have written about this before but we felt there was value in diving into the topic again.

We at Shades have seen the following scenario time and time again: a tenured employee applies for a new job to which they feel entitled and loses it to the new kid on the block.  They are upset and don’t understand why this happened.      They have been there for a long time and they have been doing what they are doing well.  What happened?

Being adaptable and innovative are not the only reasons why that scenario plays out in that manner but it is often a key contributor.  Most workplaces and industries today are evolving rapidly due to technology and social connectivity.  Even traditional blue-collar industries are becoming more advanced in how their jobs are done.  To be successful in today’s working world, you have to be able to keep up with the pace of change and not stick your head under a rock.

So how do you do that?  It isn’t easy and it may be a bit time consuming but your efforts will be worth it.  These tips are, admittedly, a bit generic but we just want to give you some general ideas on what you can do.

Do your research.  Read up on the newest information that pertains to the work you do.  If there are designations or certification programs that you can take to assist you in keeping up to date with your industry, speak with your manager or HR to see if they will partner with you in some way to complete these programs.

·       Explore what your company or industry has to offer.  Many larger companies have mentorship, networking or sponsorship programs.  You can definitely keep up to date with changes and direction if you are a part of programs like that.  Additionally, different industries may have conventions or discussion forums that focus on new developments or technology – get out there and participate!

·       Use the power of social media to help you.  You can find out a lot from others and their experiences.  You might be surprised at what you can pick up that can assist you in managing change and new information.

·       Be open!  Don’t think you can only learn from one group of people.  Of course, you can learn from people who have been around for a long time but newbies can teach you a thing or two as well.

Remember, Shades Readers, being adaptable to change and forward thinking can only make you more successful so try exploring some of our suggestions.  You can thank us later!
